Recreation Commission
June 15, 2006

Called to order at 7:33am.

Roll Call: Michele Gottschlich, Mary Lou Isaac, David Nichols, Wayne Mosley, Pam Meyers, Craig Reeder, Gus Janszen. Absent: Doug Lohmeier.

Approval of May’s Minutes made by Wayne Mosley; seconded by Gus Janszen. Motion approved.

Recognition of Visitors:
Cary Belyea, SwimSafe Pool Management
·       Season is going well; opening weekend was great
·       Andrea Knollman was lifeguard of the month
·       Angela Gorsuch pulled a four year old from the pool just as he entered deep water
·       Doug Carlberg is the pool manager
·       An in-service training day and staff meeting will be held Sunday, June 18th.
·       Main pool water leak issues have diminished (last year about 12” of water was lost each day, this year it is down to about 3” each day)
·       Outdoor spa is working great
·       Fantastic job being done this year; the kids are great; they like it
·       A recent health inspection was passed and the inspector was impressed with our facilities

David Bergan, Evendale Swim Team Head Coach
·       Things are going as planned; 190 kids again this year
·       Well supported by the parents, the department, and Commission
·       Two new coaches hired this year, and they are doing well
·       First home meet is against Reading
·       Kids enjoy being on the team. Parents are commenting to David Nichols how wonderful the program is.

Kristen Maiden, Evendale Sports Program Supervisor
·       Complements for her recent work at the soccer tournaments, fields, etc.
·       Kristen is requesting Commission support a change in soccer league affiliation to SAY (Soccer Association for Youth)
·       Our current league leaves parents with driving times sometimes as long as 45-75 minutes, one way
·       A poll of parents and coaches support the move to a new league
·       SAY soccer is a national organization on the cutting edge of youth soccer; with their headquarters here in Cincinnati
·       For this fall season, we would join SAY North; and begin creating SAY Central for next spring
·       Sharonville is joining us in this move
·       Fields and team size would be smaller; meaning players will touch the ball more.
·       Gus Janszen, parent and volunteer coach, would to like to help with the transition and sit on the board for SAY Central
·       New goals would be needed for U8 and U10 levels
·       Motion to change leagues to SAY Soccer made by Gus Janszen; seconded by Michele Gottschlich. Motion approved.

New Business
Pavilion Schedule
·       Send out a reminder each Friday before a concert reminding people of the concert and that it will move in doors if we have inclement weather.
·       Commission wants to add grill-outs to concert events, enticing people to come.

Adult Services
·       Patty is to investigate adding dance classes for adults; as a winter time evening event.

Old Business
·       Tri-Health Report – not discussion

Director’s Report
·       Princeton High School will added the village to their insurance as additional insured for use of the department tent July 24 – August 12. This would be the football team’s two-a-day pre-season practice as a cool down area. At the August meeting, Commission will review how things went.

·       Budget Sub-committee – David Nichols, Craig Reeder, Gus Janszen, Wayne Mosley.

·       Fitness Sub-committee – will meet in September.

·       Fun in the Sun is working on a program at the Founder’s Pavilion.

·       A survey about a skatepark will be posted on the web later this year.

·       The Kingsport trail to Gorman Heritage Farm has been roughed in; final clearing, gravel and seeding needs to be done before it can be used by the public.

Phi Lambda Pi Report
·       Open houses have included flag football tournament, Frisbee cornhole, kickball, sand volleyball, cornhole and a trip to Starbucks
·       Service projects: volunteering at the Family Movie Night
·       Concession stand training took place. Seventeen Phi members were hired.
·       Paintball trip was cancelled due to low sign-ups.
·       Upcoming Events: Cedar Point, July 4th 10K Run and Kid’s Carnival, Red’s Game, Myrtle Beach, Rock the Dale Concert



Open Discussion
·       Recreation’s PENN Alert system may not be reaching all parents. Michele has not received any notices from the swim team or knothole baseball team.

·       A resident has requested a bench in front of the swimming pool entrance..
·       Pool members have requested charcoal grills be put in the grassy area of the pool.


Motion to adjourn made at 8:44am by Wayne Mosley; seconded by Mary Lou Isaac. Motion approved.
